Index: Anysberg with Sarah

My sister came all the way out from England to stay with me for a while Unforunately she timed it for the few weeks before I had to hand in my MSc... we got round the problem by me handing a draft for my supervisor and then the two of us headed out to Anysberg to do the pony trail

Day 1: Du Toit's Kloof pass and a Karoo sunset
Day 2: a long ride and a campfire
Day 3: another long ride and back to Cape Town

We woke up in the morning to find Impi (1) and Savimbi (2) ready for breakfast. We had some ourselves and then made a trip up the hill... there's a real flush toilet and it's a room with a view (3)!!! Luxury in the veld It was then another long ride back to the offices and the rest of the horse (4). Turning round, we could see only part of the distance we'd come (5).

Driving out after lunch and a shower we came across springbok again (6) and the sign from the road to Tapfontein (7), the horse trail overnight. Once we'd left the reserve we went past some sheep (8 ) and then decided to go back via a dirt road rather than along the N1. We managed to avoid road works but we did get road blocks (9)!

We decided to go through the tunnel on the way back (10), it is the longest tunnel in Africa so Sarah really had to experience it We'd had one sunset before going into the tunnel but as we came out the other side, the sun was still setting (11). Then it was more sky graffitti (12) though this time all the electric lights and headlights along the N1, all the way home again.

I love shot # 10. I've always been a fan of streaky lights and photos that imply motion. Yours does both beautifully!

I'm enjoying your page very much. It really is an eclectic bunch of pics which is what makes it fun and I like your writing style. Very descriptive but not stuffy; you even poke fun at yourself. Being at your page is making me miss my friend Jill, who is from SA, but lives in California now while I've moved to Kansas.

Anysberg with Sarah: Day 2

When the day started, the clouds were low, the wind was blowing and the valley into the mountains that the pony trail followed did not look enticing (1). We drove through to the offices, seeing some springbok on the way (2) and decided to go for it anyway (3). We started off in the riding school to make sure the horses were ok with the saddle bags and bed rolls (we got some mad ones to ride - Savimbi (Sarah's horse) had been ridden once in the last year!). Sarah managed to look quite good (4) whereas I looked a bit of a twit (5). Then it was off on the trail... Really good fun. Savimbi was quite a much faster walker than Impi (my horse) was so this was about all of Sarah that I saw (6), my view of Impi was also rather restricted (7)!

By the time we got to the turn-off into the valley, the clouds had cleared and the sky was blue (8 ). WIth a gentle breeze, it was a gorgeous day for a ride. We made our way into the mountains along the track (9 shows the view to the back), and eventually made it to Tapfontein (10) with rather sore backsides! It was a 3.5 hour ride the first day...

I couldn't resist a few random shots of a ruined house at the sleepover spot (11) and an early rising moon (12) but then it was time for dinner for two (13). We were so hungry! Jacket potatoes and sauce made on the fire (14) just disappeared. We sat around the fire (15) for a while, chatting and watching the light disappear. There was a windmill creaking above us, a real Karoo sign (16). Then, before bed it was time for s'mores (17) and a bit of 'sky graffitti' (18) - the light of a glowing stick against the black of the night.

Oooo! More great food, and camp food even! Looks like you're living it up out there in God's country. Thanks for sharing.... Fri 1-Apr-2005 14:31

Wahey! A holiday! My sister's come to visit for a week and a half so it was time for a break. I handed in final drafts to my supervisor and we headed off to Anysberg for a couple of nights to do the pony trail... Here's the first day:

We decided to go up via Du Toit's Kloof pass (1) as it's a really stunning route. It was quite a cloudy day but in conjunction with the steepness of the mountains there were some amazing effects (2,3). We were slowed down by roadworks (4) but eventually made it over the top to quite an amazing view (5). The way down then followed the valley with some amazing folded mountains (6). It was then several hours drive over the flatness that the Karoo consists of, we were nearing Anysberg as it was about sunset and we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets there is... a 360 degree, multi stage sunset (7-14). It was a gentle start (7), moved through to pink fluffy marshmallow clouds in the east (10) then on to real orange glows (13) followed by a deep red finish (14). Oh it was gorgeous!!!

We were intending on camping the first night but we stopped off at Collette's to say hello and ended up staying for dinner and then spending the night there (the last 4 photos). We had a really great braai and then slept like logs...

The life of a lemon...

This one's destination - pancakes

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note added later...
The lemon goes on top of the pancakes, with a slight sprinkling of sugar - not inside Plus, I'm talking about good old English pancakes here, the really big thin ones - best eaten with lemon and sugar
welcome in the competition, helen -- fine entry! Sat 19-Mar-2005 18:25
Lemon pancakes?! I have heard of apple pancakes and banana pancakes and others, but never lemon. Are you willing to share your family's secret recipe with us? Sun 20-Mar-2005 06:41
