Was sitting at home in Norwich one evening (I just spent 2 weeks in England) and noticed that the clouds were making some rather funky shapes

A long drive home

It takes the same amount of time to drive from Massingir Dam to my house as it takes to drive from my house to Jo'burg...

The second day of the Mozambique trip...
We spent the morning driving east across the bottom of the park from Massingir to the sandveld between the Shingwedzi and Limpopo Rivers. It was quite a drive!
The afternoon was spent discussing field methods and towards sunset Mike, John and Jakes arrived. Sundowners from the dam wall... what a view

I haven't updated in a while... I haven't been around in a while! The last few weeks have been rather hectic, dashing around doing field work, visiting the reserves I'm going to be working in, collecting data, and... having my first trip to Mozambique.
My study area is the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area which includes Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. A group of 6 of us went over for four days to have a look at the park, see some waterpoints and try out my assessment methods.
It was a great experience, amazing how you cross the border out of South Africa and all of a sudden you're into "real africa". There are a lot of people living in the park (more on that in another post). The first day we simply drove in! It took a bit longer than expected... troubles at the border post and the last 20km of road is not all that fantastic!
I took a Wits bakkie through, and it was only when I got to Giriyondo that I was informed that I needed a letter from the university to say I was allowed to take the bakkie into Mozambique... the guys at the university had neglected to tell me this when I was organising everything! Luckily there was a nice policeman there (and I smiled at him nicely ) so we made a plan to get a fax from the university. I made a phone call to a friend and was then supposed to wait for the fax... but it was lunchtime and the others were waiting so he let me go and told me I must just pick up the fax on Friday on my way out!
We stayed over at a camp by Massingir so took a slow drive down from Giriyondo, having a look at the vegetation on the way. I now know where all the tall trees from Kruger are... they emigrated to Mozambique! It's amazing how fast the plants change. The first 50km of road is quite good but the last 20km is through the villages and there are some fun eroded patches... nothing that required 4x4 though Mike and I were discussing a contest between our cars - I have a Tazz and he has a Golf... I think for the moment the Wits bakkie is a better idea though!
We got to the camp in time for a late lunch then set up tents, had a look at the dam and talked work work work. Unfortunately we missed the sunset...

Index: Trip to Mozambique
|
|
My study area for my PhD includes the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. I had never been there before, I'd never even been to Mozambique, so part of my preliminary study included a four day trip to take a look around and try out my methods.
The photos:
Day 1: Driving through to Massingir
Day 2: The southern section
Day 3: Working in the Sanctuary
Day 4: Driving home through Kruger
Enjoy
